About 700 refugees reach Ghana from Burkina Faso in attempt to flee attack

Over 700 Burkinabe citizens who fled terrorist assaults in neighboring Burkina Faso have arrived, according to the Ghana Refugee Board.

The majority of the migrants, who are women and children, are claimed to have left a number of settlements in the Boulgou department nearby Bittou province where Islamist militant groups have intensified their attacks on local militias.

Following claims by the Islamic extremist militants of working with the country’s security and defense forces, civilians have also come under attack.

The communities of Bansi, Mognori, Sapeliga, Kutanga, and Yarigungu in the Binduri, Bawku Municipal, and Bawku West district are among those where the foreigners are looking for safety.

The majority of refugees are reportedly from the Benliyali community in Burkina Faso, where two locals, including an imam, were killed in an alleged terrorist attack.

Some of the refugees are also being sheltered in Getiga, a border hamlet in the Binduri area of the Upper East Region, according to Tetteh Paddy, executive secretary of the Ghana Refugee Board, who verified the arrival of the Burkinabe nationals.

In order to keep an eye on the issue, he claimed that the Refugee Board was in frequent contact with both the local and regional authorities.

Ayinga Yakubu Abagre, the district chief executive for Binduri, has stated that sufficient plans have been made to temporarily house the Burkinabe nationals.

In order to flee the Islamic terrorist combatants, a large number of Burkinabe citizens have flooded different sections of the district, according to the DCE, and the assembly has been able to organize relief supplies to help them.

The DCE told the media that the assembly was closely collaborating with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Health Service, and other local authorities to ensure the refugees are well-cared for while touring six camps in the district where the Burkinabe nationals are being housed.

The DCE urged donors to help the struggling refugees while warning them against actions that would interfere with their short-term stay.
