UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed passes away

The President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has passed away on Friday, May 13, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced.

He died at age 73.

“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs condoles the people of the UAE, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the world over the demise of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the UAE,” a Wam statement read.

Sheikh Khalifa has long ceased to be involved in day-to-day matters, with his brother, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, recognized as the de-factor ruler.

There was no immediate word on who will succeed him.

Sheikh Khalifa succeeded his father, the UAE’s founder, Sheikh Zayed, in 2004. He has been seldom seen in official images or at public events in recent years. He had a stroke a decade later, and has been largely out of the public eye ever since.

The world’s highest tower, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is named for the late monarch.

More to come soon…..
