The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) portal should be used frequently by pension scheme contributors to check on the status of their payments.
At a stakeholder engagement session on pensions organized by the Sunyani Zonal Office of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) at Goaso in the Asunafo North Municipality of Ahafo Region, Mr. David Tettey-Amey Abbey, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NPRA, offered the advise.
Workers from the official and informal sectors as well as labor union representatives attended the discussion.
In order to keep contributors informed, he stated, “We have asked SSNIT to notify them one year prior to their retirement. However, it is vital that contributors also use the Trust’s self-portal.”
Mr. Abbey emphasized the importance of raising workers’ awareness so they will join the pension plans of their choosing for a safe future.
According to research, retiring in poverty has a major psychological impact; as a result, Mr. Abbey said, “The NPRA will continue to emphasize pensions and retirements for people to plan ahead.”
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Ms. Martha Tuuli, the Goaso SSNIT Branch Manager, urged employees in both the formal and informal sectors to make sound retirement plans.
The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana’s Ahafo Regional Chairman, Mr. Samad Kanton, called the event “timely” and said it had given the attendees a lot of new information.
